Andrew Jackson and the Bank War or Quantitative Methods for Finan

Andrew Jackson and the Bank War

Author: Robert V Remini

International Accounting: A User Perspective

Author: Shahrokh M Saudagaran

As business and capital markets have continue to grow more global over recent years, the need for cross-border financial information has correspondingly increased. This has brought international accounting to the forefront. International Accounting: A User Perspective is designed to provide an understanding of international accounting issues to current and future business managers. The book takes a user perspective to international financial reporting because most business executives are more likely to be users of financial information that crosses national borders than users of it. With the recent problems exposed in the quality of financial reporting in many countries, a solid understanding of international accounting issues is an important part of the portfolio of skills that managers in medium and large enterprises must possess.

Booknews

Introduces international accounting concepts to future business managers, focusing on the fact that most business executives are more likely to be users of transnational financial information rather than preparers of it. Coverage includes financial reporting in the global area, harmonizing standards globally, accounting for currency exchange rate changes, using corporate financial reports across borders, and managerial issues in international accounting. Includes questions, exercises, and cases. For use in undergraduate and graduate business programs. The author teaches at Santa Clara University. Annotation c. Decision Modeling in Policy Management or The Law of Multi Bank Financing

Decision Modeling in Policy Management: An Introduction to the Analytic Concepts

Author: Giampiero EG E Beroggi

The 10 chapters address the most relevant issues in decision modeling in policy management; the problem solving process, visual decision modeling, descriptive and normative preference elicitation and aggregation methods, dealing with uncertainty in dynamic problems, social choices, conflict resolution, and constraint-optimization problems. A problem-oriented engineering approach is chosen which covers the most popular decision modeling issues in: (1) decision analysis (decision trees, probabilistic influence diagrams, fuzzy decision making, risk analysis), (2) operations research (facility location, scheduling, linear and nonlinear programming, network oplimization), and (3) economics (cost-benefit analysis, capital budgeting, shadow prices, marginal rate of subjstisttion net present value game theory).

Booknews

Presents a three-step framework for the decision modeling process, involving visual-structural modeling, analytic-formal modeling, and algorithmic resolution modeling. This approach is applied to relevant descriptive and normative approaches for decision modeling in policy management, accompanied with numerical examples. Takes a visual approach to decision modeling in policy management, with some 100 figures and illustrations, integrating the European and American schools. Includes some 100 problems and worked solutions. For students with basic background in linear algebra and calculus, in courses in engineering management and decision analysis. Annotation c. Interesting book: The Runners Book of Daily Inspiration or The Flight from Intimacy

The Law of Multi-Bank Financing: Syndications and Participations

Author: Agasha Mugasha

Combining doctrinal, practical, and comparative approaches The Law of Multi-Bank Financing provides a comprehensive analysis of the legal and regulatory facets of multibank financing (particularly loan syndications and loan participations) as well as developing a conceptual framework that allows a consistent and rational approach to these financial practices.

The book includes chapters on what multi-bank financing is and who does it, relevant areas of law (including contract, torts, insolvency, tax, and statutes, such as the Bank Act), the mechanics of arranging loan syndications and loan participations, financial accommodation used (direct loans, bank guarantees, letters of credit, and bankers' acceptances), legal relations between parties in loan syndications and loan participations, rights and duties of the agent bank, securities regulation issues in loan syndications and loan participations, and accounting and tax issues in loan syndications and loan participations. Agasha Mugasha argues that loan syndications, loan participations, and related practices are commercial transactions between sophisticated parties and should be analysed and regulated as such. Sample documents for syndicated facility agreements, participation agreements, sale and participation agreements, and standby letters of credit are provided in appendices.

Based on law in Canada, particularly Ontario, The Law of Multi-Bank Financing includes discussions of a significant body of United States jurisprudence as well as the most important court decisions in other common-law countries.

Political Issues in Britain Today

Author: Bill Jones

British politics has been revolutionized in the past ten years by two major factors: the hegemony of Thatcherism for eighteen years; and the current dominance of what some say is variant-Blairism--forged in opposition and enthroned in government since May 1997. This volume addresses key political issues which occupy the government and opposition, including: Blair's style of government, the philosophy of the welfare state and the question of its reform, policy-making in the oppressed local government sector, law and order, reform of the voting system, the effect of EU membership on British politics, the much criticized monarchy, privatization, the environment, education, standards in public life, the politics of the health service, and the usefulness of the House of Lords.

Booknews

Offers accessible studies of issues in British politics, providing a complement rather than a substitute for more comprehensive studies. Coverage includes the House of Commons, reforming the electoral system, senior ministers in British government, politics of health, economic and monetary union, and environmental policy. This edition takes into account changes in the political scene since 1993, and gives new perspectives on the monarchy, the political style of Tony Blair, reforming welfare, devolution, sleaze, Labor ideology, and funding of political parties. Onions Are My Husband or Birth and Fortune

Onions Are My Husband: Survival and Accumulation by West African Market Women

Author: Gracia Clark

In the most comprehensive analysis to date of the world of open air marketplaces of West Africa, Gracia Clark studies the market women of Kumasi, Ghana, in order to understand the key social forces that generate, maintain, and continually reshape the shifting market dynamics.
Probably the largest of its kind in West Africa, the Kumasi Central Market houses women whose positions vary from hawkers of meals and cheap manufactured goods to powerful wholesalers, who control the flow of important staples. Drawing on more than four years of field research, during which she worked alongside several influential market "Queens", Clark explains the economic, political, gender, and ethnic complexities involved in the operation of the marketplace and examines the resourcefulness of the market women in surviving the various hazards they routinely encounter, from coups d'etat to persistent sabotage of their positions from within.

Economic anthropologist Clark focuses on the women in the marketplace in the city of Kumasi, Ghana. She looks at such aspects of their lives and livelihood as getting into the market, the regional web, buying and selling, the control of resources, negotiations, and home and husband. Birth and Fortune: The Impact of Numbers on Personal Welfare

Author: Richard A Easterlin

In this influential work, Richard A. Easterlin shows how the size of a generation—the number of persons born in a particular year—directly and indirectly affects the personal welfare of its members, the make-up and breakdown of the family, and the general well being of the economy.
"[Easterlin] has made clear, I think unambiguously, that the baby-boom generation is economically underprivileged merely because of its size. And in showing this, he demonstrates that population size can be as restrictive as a factor as sex, race, or class on equality of opportunity in the U.S."—Jeffrey Madrick, Business Week

Not only do the goals of marketing departments often fail to match those of finance, they sometimes outright conflict. The two departments speak different languages, they have no clear link, and—bottom line—the markets for customers and investors are separate. But one innovative book can change everything. CREATING MARKET VALUE illustrates a cause-and-effect model of relationships between marketing and finance based on a common language, economic theory, and financial accounting data. This model links intangible assets to the market value of firms. Breaking with the tradition of valuing companies based on unrelated ratios and metrics, Dr. Victor Cook identifies three metrics that bind marketing and finance: the Value Sales Principle, the Rule of Maximum Earnings, and the Competitive Valuation Paradigm. These groundbreaking principles point to a model that unites important metrics from marketing and sales and adds to the understanding of exactly what drives the value of an organization.

Performance Driven Organizational Change or Career Counseling

Performance-Driven Organizational Change: The Organizational Portfolio

Author: Lex Donaldson

In Performance-Driven Organizational Change, Lex Donaldson, one of the leading scholars in the field of organizational theory, introduces a thought-provoking theory of performance-driven organizational change. He argues that recurrent crises of poor organizational performance are required to trigger adaptive organizational change in many aspects of the organization. Moreover, the adaptive change induced by each crisis creates the capacity for fresh organizational growth. Hence, through a series of adaptations and resulting growth spurts, the organization grows larger and more effective. He notes that while there has been much research into optimal management and human resource practices resulting in prescriptive advice, that without performance crises there is a good chance that needed organizational change will not be forthcoming.

This book is highly recommended for advanced students, researchers, and scholars in the areas of organization theory, organizational change, strategy, human resource management, and economics.

Booknews

Proposes a new theory of organizational adaptation and growth, built on contingency theory. Donaldson (organization design, the Australian Graduate School of Management) argues that recurrent crises of poor organizational performance are required to induce the adaptive change necessary for organizations to grow larger and more effective. He cites examples from research across multiple disciplines in support of his ideas. Of interest to students and scholars in the areas of strategy, human resource management, economics, and organizational change. Paper edition (unseen), $24.95. Career Counseling: A Narrative Approach

Author: Larry Cochran

For decades, scholars and professionals have been attracted to theories offering a deeper view of career, but have been frustrated by difficulties in translating theories of meaning making, development, and identity into viable practice. At the same time, there has been growing disenchantment with impersonal techniques of matching an individual's traits with skills required for a specific vocation. While personality traits and talents may help to predict a predisposition to a career type, this method of analysis neglects the influences of human purpose, passion, and life history. In Career Counseling, author Larry Cochran fills the void by introducing the theory of narrative construction, a method of counseling that injects personal identity into career development in a practical way. Cochran demonstrates how literary models and constructivist methods can be used in career development to provide the essential subjective dimension that has been lacking in practical counseling. In addition, he provides the innovative materials that are necessary for making this process both efficient and effective. Contributing a unique and important perspective and approach to career counseling, this volume will be widely used by scholars and professionals in the fields of career counseling, clinical/counseling psychology, social psychology, and management.

The Econometric Analysis of Time Series or Distributed Work

The Econometric Analysis of Time Series

Author: Andrew C Harvey

This new edition of A.C. Harvey's clearly written, upper-level text has been revised and several sections have been completely rewritten. There is new material on a number of topics, including unit roots, ARCH, and cointegration.

The Econometric Analysis of Time Series focuses on the statistical aspects of model building, with an emphasis on providing an understanding of the main ideas and concepts in econometrics rather than presenting a series of rigorous proofs. It explores the way in which recent advances in time series analysis have affected the development of a theory of dynamic econometrics, sets out an integrated approach to the problems of estimation and testing based on the method of maximum likelihood, and presents a coherent strategy for model selection.

A.C. Harvey is Professor of Econometrics at the London School of Economics.

Distributed Work

Author: Pamela J Hinds

Technological advances and changes in the global economy are increasing the geographic distribution of work in industries as diverse as banking, wine production, and clothing design. Many workers communicate regularly with distant coworkers; some monitor and manipulate tools and objects at a distance. Work teams are spread across different cities or countries. Joint ventures and multiorganizational projects entail work in many locations. Two famous examples--the Hudson Bay Company's seventeenth-century fur trading empire and the electronic community that created the original Linux computer operating system--suggest that distributed work arrangements can be flexible, innovative, and highly successful. At the same time, distributed work complicates workers' professional and personal lives. Distributed work alters how people communicate and how they organize themselves and their work, and it changes the nature of employee-employer relationships.

This book takes a multidisciplinary approach to the study of distributed work groups and organizations, the challenges inherent in distributed work, and ways to make distributed work more effective. Specific topics include division of labor, incentives, managing group members, facilitating interaction among distant workers, and monitoring performance. The final chapters focus on distributed work in one domain, collaborative scientific research. The contributors include psychologists, cognitive scientists, sociologists, anthropologists, historians, economists, and computer scientists.

Transforming the Appalachian Countryside: Railroads, Deforestation, and Social Change in West Virginia, 1880-1920

Author: Ronald L Lewis

In 1880, ancient-growth forest still covered two-thirds of West Virginia, but by the 1920s lumbermen had denuded the entire region. Ronald Lewis explores the transformation in these mountain counties precipitated by deforestation. As the only state that lies entirely within the Appalachian region, West Virginia provides an ideal site for studying the broader social impact of deforestation in Appalachia, the South, and the eastern United States. Eventually, even ardent supporters of industrialization had reason to contemplate the consequences of unregulated exploitation. Once the timber was gone, the mills closed and the railroads pulled up their tracks leaving behind an environmental disaster and a new class of marginalized rural poor to confront the worst depression in American history.

Economics and Consumer Behavior or Working Relationships

Economics and Consumer Behavior

Author: Angus Deaton

The idea of duality has proved to be a powerful device in modern work on the economics of consumer behaviour. The authors have used duality to provide an integrated and accessible treatment of this subject. The book focuses on applications of the theory to welfare economics and econometric analysis. The book begins with four chapters that provide a self-contained presentation of the basic theory and its use in applied econometrics. These chapters also include elementary extensions of the theory to labour supply, durable goods, the consumption function, and rationing. The rest of the book is divided into three parts. In the first of these the authors discuss restrictions on choice and aggregation problems. The next part consists of chapters on consumer index numbers; household characteristics, demand, and household welfare comparisons; and social welfare and inequality. The last part extends the coverage of consumer behaviour to include the quality of goods and household production theory, labour supply and human capital theory, the consumption function and intertemporal choice, the demand for durable goods, and choice under uncertainty.

Introduction to the Economics of Financial Markets or Intangibles

Introduction to the Economics of Financial Markets

Author: James Bradfield

There are many textbooks for business students that provide a systematic, introductory development of the economics of financial markets. However, there are as yet no introductory textbooks aimed at more easily daunted undergraduate liberal arts students. Introduction to the Economics of Financial Markets fills this gap by providing an extremely accessible introductory exposition of how economists analyze both how, and how well, financial markets organize the intertemporal allocation of scarce resources. The central theme is that the function of a system of financial markets is to enable consumers, investors, and managers of firms to effect mutually beneficial intertemporal exchanges. James Bradfield uses the standard concept of economic efficiency (Pareto Optimality) to assess the efficacy of the financial markets. He presents an intuitive, and introductory, understanding of the primary theoretical and empirical models that economists use to analyze financial markets, and then uses these models to discuss implications for public policy. Students who use this text will acquire an understanding of the economics of financial markets that will enable them to read, with some sophistication, articles in the public press about financial markets and about public policy toward those markets. The book is addressed to undergraduate students in the liberal arts, but will also be useful for undergraduate and beginning graduate students in programs of business administration who want an understanding of how economists assess financial markets against the criteria of allocative and informational efficiency.
